Courses & Programs With Related Expenses

 

In some courses and/or particular fields of study, students may expect to incur expenses that are distinct from Special Course Fees and may be in addition to Special Course Fees for certain courses. These are identified as course-related expenses and are for material or equipment students are required to supply in addition to books and/or general kinds of supplies (such as notebooks, pens, etc.).

Examples of course-related expenses might be a computer and a drafting board for students majoring in Architecture; certain instruments for students majoring in music performance (such as a violin or cello); curriculum development supplies for students majoring in Art education (these become part of their teaching equipment); production supplies for students majoring in Media Arts (these become a part of the portfolio).

Courses and/or programs for which such course-related expenses would exceed $75 are identified below. The list is subject to change and may not be all inclusive.

Architecture (Professional Phase):

Computer
Drafting board
Studio courses: ARC 201,202, 302, 402 (projects become part of portfolio)
Thesis project: ARC 452 (materials for major portfolio project)

Animal Sciences:
Equine independent studies (399, 499). Approximately $120 for lab/vet supplies.
Course: AN S 299 has fee of $200
Art:
Students typically spend from $50 to $100 per studio class (in addition to Special Course Fees for ART) on materials and supplies necessary to complete their coursework. Following are examples of such course-related expenses. (Note: Special Course Fees cover items purchased by the department in bulk or in large quantities that result in significant cost savings to students.)

Photography: $100+ (camera equipment and any specialty photographic items students may purchase to create portfolios)

Print Making: $75 (tools and paper; other supplies students may purchase to create special projects for their portfolios for job interviews)

Painting/Drawing: $75 - $100 (canvases, special paints/brushes students may purchase as they develop their portfolios)

Visual Communication: $100+ (computers, software or tools, portfolio cases and various supplies students may want to purchase as they develop their portfolios for employment)

Sculpture: $75 - $300 (materials students may wish to purchase to develop their portfolios for employment)

Art Education:

Curriculum development materials (become part of their teaching equipment)

Media Arts:

Production courses (such as 297A, 304, 305, 311A, 314, 315, 401 and 498A) and New Media courses (such as 210, 268R, 268S, 304, 306, 340, 406 and 506).

These expenses might include audio/video supplies, computer software and hardware, or lights and could be upwards of $500 or more. The projects become part of student portfolios.

Music:

Personal instrument (performance courses with MUSI prefix)

Accompanists for lessons and recitals, primarily for voice students (performance courses with MUSI prefix)

Formal wear -- generally a one-time purchase for ensemble courses such as choir, orchestra or other ensembles (MUS 200, 202, 400, 402, 500, 502)

Theatre Arts:

Students typically spend from $50 to $100 per studio class (in addition to special fees) on materials and supplies necessary to complete their coursework.

Following are examples of such course related expenses:

  • Papers, pencils, and special paints/brushes students may purchase as they develop their portfolios.
  • Tickets for theatre performances (may be less than $75)
