Several years ago, the United States Congress passed the Higher Education Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 and created the Hope Scholarship and the Lifetime Learning education tax credits.

Social Security Number: Privacy and Corrections

Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code requires that you (the student) give your correct SSN to persons (in this case, the University of Arizona) who must file information returns with the IRS. The IRS uses this number for identification purposes and for help in verifying the accuracy of your tax return.

• The SSN provided on a student’s W-9S (found on Student Link ) will be used only for IRS purposes.
• Students must update their W-9S by December 30th to receive a 1098-T Form for the tax year.
