Grading Policy Manual: Description of Current Grades

Grade Description Use
A Excellent In GPA calculation with grade-point value of 4
B Good In GPA calculation with grade-point value of 3
C Satisfactory In GPA calculation with grade-point value of 2
D Poor In GPA calculation with grade-point value of 1
E Failure In GPA calculation with grade-point value of 0

Awarded to students whose work indicates performance below minimum required standards.

Failing grades may also be awarded as follows:

  • when a student drops the class after the fourth week of the semester and is doing failing work
  • for administrative drops
  • when a grade of I is not removed within one year.

The E cannot be awarded the first four weeks of the semester.

F Failure Not included in the GPA.

Awarded only when a student is registered in a course under the Pass/Fail option. The criteria for awarding this grade are the same as for the grade of E; therefore, a student must maintain minimum required standards.

I Incomplete Not included in the GPA.

Awarded at the end of the term when a course has been substantially completed. The I is not awarded in place of a failing grade or when the student is to repeat the course; in such a case, a grade other than I must be assigned.

Incomplete Grade Policy in the General Catalog.

K Course in progress Not included in the GPA.
  1. Awarded for any undergraduate, 500-, 600-, or 700-level course that requires more than one term for completion. Course re-registration is not required.
  2. Awarded by the instructor for 900-level courses. Students must re-register for these courses each term. K grades remain on the student's permanent record until removed with a final grade, but do not enter into the calculation of the grade-point average. Time limit for completion of such work for full credit for the master's degree is six years; for the doctoral degree, the limit is ten years.
  3. Awarded by the Office of the Registrar for Supplementary Registration (930) at the time of enrollment. Students must re-register for this course each term. K grades will remain permanently on the student's academic record, except when the grade of "CR" is awarded for the terminal semester.
