Background
Room & Course Scheduling is a unit within the Office of the Registrar. Among its many responsibilities, Room & Course Scheduling maintains the course-section-term data in the Student Information System(SIS); creates and maintains all course sections each term; reviews and reports course section creation to ensure data integrity in the Schedule of Classes; maintains a database of ‘Comment Files’ that provides additional level, course, and section information in the Schedule of Classes. In addition, Room & Course Scheduling oversees the use of 257 rooms that have been designated as ‘Centrally Scheduled.’ Room & Course Scheduling schedules classes in rooms and schedules ad hoc events using Ad Astra scheduling system. For Fall 2007 semester, a total of 36,271 sections (including exclusive and crosslisted courses) have been scheduled of which 28,469 sections are TBA and 7,802 sections have a time and room assignment.
Room & Course Scheduling coordinates with different groups who use centrally scheduled space. Room & Course Scheduling meets with department heads and departmental representatives to review room assignments and procedures. Room & Course Scheduling is in close contact with Audio/Visual, Security, Heating/Cooling and Custodial Services to ensure room safety, security and the availability of equipment.
Mission
Room & Course Scheduling’s mission is to schedule classes in the most suitable classroom space taking into account the layout of the room, technology level, specific building/room, and seat capacity requested by each academic department via the Greenbar process as well as Room & Course Scheduling online request forms.
Room & Course Scheduling is pleased to report that on average over 70 percent of the departments requesting a specific building/room is assigned to a building/room requested. Over 90 percent of the sections are assigned to a room with the technology requested and for the sections that are not assigned to a room with the technology level requested, Room & Course Scheduling works closely with Audio/Visual department to coordinate the physical delivery of Audio/Visual equipment.
