Transfer Credit Preapproval

A University of Arizona student may complete one or more degree requirements with courses from another institution. Advanced planning ensures that transfer courses will apply toward specific requirements in your major, minor, or General Education Program.  Before enrolling for courses elsewhere, especially during your senior year, please be aware of the University Credit Requirement for graduation from the UA.

Steps for preapproval of transfer credit from other institutions:

1.   Students should fill out section A, including personal information and the courses you plan to take at the other institution.

2a. If you will attend an institution in the United States, submit the Transfer Credit Preapproval form to the Registration and Transcripts Office, Administration Building, room 210, where part B will be filled out. An evaluator will determine whether the institution you are planning to attend is regionally accredited and whether the courses will transfer to the UA. Please allow 48 hours turn-around time. During busy times, processing may take longer.

2b. If you will attend an institution in another country, take the Transfer Credit Preapproval form to the International Admissions Office, http://admissions.arizona.edu/International.html, or 520-621-3111, to speak with the Director of International Admissions. You will need to provide documentation about the foreign institution and the courses you plan to take, in order for the Director to complete part B of the form.

3.   Students will take the form to their advisor for consultation regarding how the transfer credit will apply toward a degree program. To complete section C, you may need to meet with more than one advisor if the courses you want to transfer fulfill different kinds of requirements. Your major academic advisor will help you identify who must approve each course. Please provide course description(s), definition of the course numbering system, and any other documentation to assist the advisor in determining if the course work can be applied to your UA degree. This information is often available on-line.

4.   The completed form should be submitted to your college or major department advising office.

5.   After you complete the course(s) and receive grades, send an official transcript to the Registration and Transcripts office. Keep in mind that the applicability of these courses may be subject to change if you change your program of study.  Also, please review these online policies relating to transfer evaluations:

Please note: If you plan to take a course at an Arizona Community College, you should refer to the Course Equivalency Guide, which is part of the Arizona Course Applicability System (AZCAS), to ensure that the courses will apply appropriately to your degree program. Community college courses listed in AZCAS with direct UA equivalencies do not need preapproval to transfer to the UA.

If the course transfers as department elective credit, you should ask your academic advisor how that course will apply toward your academic program.

Students seeking pre-approval for English Composition courses should contact the Writing Program. If your course is already on the Writing Program's list of pre-approved courses, you do not need to complete the Transfer Credit Preapproval form. Contact the Writing Program at 621-3553, or stop by Modern Languages 380 for more information.
